Hery Paz :: The Ultimate Quest for Essential Jazz Enlightenment
Born and raised in Poblado Cabaiguan, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, Hery Paz is a New York based Cuban composer, visual artist and multi-instrumentalist. His talent effortlessly breaks the lush clear windows of haunted cathedrals worldwide as well as the inexpensive eyewear of the humbled spectators just below. A panic-less audience gazes upon his explosive mania of music and triumphant arrangements that startlingly impregnate the secrets of the hysteric human conscious as it splits a fully attended club like some esoteric geode of space and time. A math-less arrangement of notes, inhales and exhales all coexisting in some tough exoskeleton near Birdland and Minton’s Playhouse. Paz channels an absolutely historical headspace that so accurately mirrors the emotions and freak integrity of some of the greats like that of Mingus, Don Cherry, Sun Ra, Evan Parker and Miles Davis. The musician has worked with a few different outfits and projects over the years since arriving in the holy city such as Tablopan, Tetraptych, Sferos and the Andrew Schiller Quintet before releasing his groundbreaking solo debut last year: Henry Paz Featuring Roman Diaz & Francisco Mela - “Jardineros”, on the New York based label 577 Records.
The prolific mediation of Paz’ compositions are of this truly sacred space demonstrated in the brain that once experienced sets off a series of immaculate explosives in perfect choreographed color, vibrations and visual expertise. I would love to see Paz perform an improvised set in front of a live audience while a screening of the wicked classic “Holy Mountain” from the mind of Alejandro Jodorowsky played curiously behind the band in some animated nightmare of religion, art and financial awkwardness. Expect brand new music from Paz in mid February as he sets off on a brand new year in music, art and boundless human expression.
