Setting - “At Eulogy” - DOSed :: 9/6
With epic swells of cosmic movement both operatic and cinematic, filling the low humming canyon of historical harmony with serene spells, a calm wind approaches from the East to clear the mind in some radical effort not yet defined. Where bone melts into the rock, leaving behind a river of rich calcium and dense texture, the wildlife catches its aroma from a far away distance and act on the graceful sacrifice that once stood for something so long ago.
As holy silence fills the rooms of the canyon, its walls breathing in rhythm with the sun and moon, a holographic chant pours into the rock and living dust, bringing it to life in some effort to mesmerize the unbothered spirits that roam its prehistoric dwellings. Whether it’s the rich Native American history that sprawls across its exoskeleton, or the monumental mountains that carefully hold everything in place, North Carolina is rich and mesmerizing for a number of reasons and the music expressed from the widened lungs of its people echoes something sincerely magical and outstandingly relatable.
A powerful force in forbidden flight, Hillsborough, North Carolina’s collective trio, Setting, is a staggering example of what it means to explore the territories of both the romantic and epic reclusiveness of the human spirit via the language of nature, calculated chaos and metaphysical connection. Comprised of members Nathan Bowles, Jaime Fennelly and Joe Westerlund, together these potent and poetic musicians stir the ancient skies with inherited consciousness and prosperous navigation. Exiting the visceral vehicle of last year’s stellar release, “at Black Mountain College Museum” and onto the next, the NC-based trio effortlessly captivate the eager ears of their listeners with yet another installment via the live experience with, “at Eulogy”.
Set for release in early September on Drop Of Sun’s tape label, DOSed, the band’s stunning performance takes place at the Asheville, NC-based venue, Eulogy, and it's here that the group rip the roof from its fragile base and expose its crawling contents to the distant planets and nearby stars with fierce attitude. With Bowles on banjo, keyboard, tapes and percussion, Fennelly on harmonium and synthesizer and Westerlund doubling down on drums and percussion, the sparsely populated movement that is Setting, completely alters reality with an atmospheric climate that shakes you to the core like that of some of the greats that they nod to in this fight, or flight expedition into sonic greatness. While transcribing the technicalities of fearless faith, hope, rebellion and the mighty ritual of burning midnight oil, the band truly reflects vibrant colors of great expression and endless narratives into the ballistic unknown with their live performance at Eulogy.
