The Many Shades of Tim Hill
Hill is one of those unique artists that you wonder where exactly he came from, or where he’s always been for that matter. Not exactly having the “traditional” trajectory of a musician that has played in a number of groups, aside from his participation in LA based group Allah-Las, or released a body of music prior to his already timeless, self-recorded debut “Payador” back in 2019. But somehow the familiarity of his music is immediately inviting yet mysterious as it stretches and explores elements of romance, loss, country, labor and dreams. After “Payador”, Hill released his follow up album “Giant”, a more studio driven record that Hill would say isn’t his most beloved project, or favorite, but one that has its moments of honesty and beauty. It’s simply different. And that brings us to the October offering of “Shades of Green”, an EP that’s “bringing it all back home” in a way that “Payador” did with its sensitive DIY approach. Featuring four tracks, the title number “Shades of Green” is a romantic piece that portrays this sort of sinking ship. The many different hues of liquid green that carefully display this portrait of loneliness and a deep sense of longing for hope. Set for release later this month on dueling labels Innovative Leisure and Calico Discos, “Shades of Green” is an instant classic set in this carefully crafted ecosystem in a west coast country painting somewhere in a local bar. Passerby’s glancing at it as they enter a room filled with deep dark smoke and connecting glass from all sides. What an evening to be had…
