Gilles Mardirossian - Fuzz

This publication is dedicated to the late Norbert “Nono” Mardirossian. It is in English as well as French.

Born and raised in Marseille, Mardirossian began to fall in love with and would soon begin playing the bass the guitar along with his late brother, whom played guitar, and the chemistry would soon fall into place. Influenced by bands such as UFO, Deep Purple and Santana. Mardirossian joined a group called Frank Tassy with his brother and others members prior to Fuzz. Shortly thereafter they began rehearsing as Fuzz and the rest is history! It was a pleasure speaking with Gilles about his life, his influences in music and what has kept him going throughout his life. This interview is featured in English as well as Gilles’ native language, French. Enjoy!

My paternal grandparents fled Armenia because of the genocide in 1915 and settled in Marseille where my father was born. My mother is from the Lozère department in France. She came to Marseille after meeting my father in the 1950s. As for me, I was born there and I still live there.

Mes grands parents paternels ont fuit l'Arménie à cause du génocide en 1915 et se sont installés à Marseille où mon père est né. Ma mère est originaire du département de la Lozère en France. Elle est venue sur Marseille après avoir rencontré mon père dans les années 50. Quant à moi, j'y suis né et j'y réside toujours.

What was growing up like for you?

I grew up until the age of 5 in a poor neighborhood north of Marseille, in a tiny apartment, with no bathroom and with a shared toilet in the courtyard. My mother was not working and my father was a truck driver during the day and a dock worker at night so that he could earn more money and feed us. This allowed us to leave this unsanitary place and move into a larger, more comfortable apartment where my brother was born. I went to elementary school, college, high school and then to the Faculty of Law.

J'ai grandi jusqu'à l'âge de 5 ans dans un quartier pauvre au nord de Marseille, dans un minuscule appartement, sans salle de bains et avec des toilettes communes dans la cour. Ma mère ne travaillait pas et mon père était chauffeur routier le jour et docker la nuit pour pouvoir gagner plus d'argent et nous nourrir. Cela nous a permis de quitter ce lieu insalubre et d’emménager dans un appartement plus grand, avec plus de confort où mon frère est né. Je suis allé à l'école primaire, au collège, au lycée puis en Faculté de Droit.

You have a brother, correct?

Vous avez un frère, n'est-ce pas?

Yes, I had a brother... He died in 2009... Norbert was not only my brother but a friend, a confidant and a great guitarist with whom I got along wonderfully...

Oui, j'avais un frère... il est décédé en 2009... Norbert était non seulement mon frère mais un ami, un confident et un super guitariste avec qui je m'entendais à merveilles...

When did you first become interested in music and what was it about the bass that initially fascinated you?

Quand avez-vous commencé à vous intéresser à la musique et en quoi la basse vous a-telle initialement fascinée?

I started to listen to classical music very young then around 14 years old, variety and around 15/16 years old, rock. Soon after, I discovered the feeling of playing music while having fun with a bass left at my house by a neighbor who had confiscated it from his son to punish him for poor school performance. My brother, Norbert, had just started learning guitar a few months ago, so we both started playing and despite my trial and error, I immediately managed to get out the correct notes.

J'ai commencé à écouter de la musique classique très jeune puis vers 14 ans, la variété et vers 15/16 ans, le rock. Peu de temps après, j'ai découvert la sensation de jouer de la musique en m'amusant avec une basse laissée chez moi, par un voisin, qui l'avait confisquée à son fils pour le punir de mauvais résultats scolaires. Mon frère, Norbert, venait juste de commencer à apprendre la guitare depuis quelques mois, alors on s'est mis à jouer tous les deux et malgré mes tâtonnements, j'ai tout de suite réussi à sortir des notes correctes.

Where would you go to see bands perform in those early days and who were among some of the first groups you saw live that left a heavy impression on you?

Où iriez-vous pour voir des groupes jouer à ces débuts et qui faisaient partie des premiers groupes que vous avez vus en direct et qui vous ont laissé une forte impression?

Santana, Rory Gallagher, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent, Scorpions, Toto and Trust are the bands that I saw that have marked me the most on stage. At the time our influences mainly came from Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Van Hallen, Saxon, AC / DC, Thin Lizzy, Warning, UFO, Colosseum 2 etc...

When did it dawn on you that music was something you wanted to pursue?

Quand avez-vous réalisé que la musique était quelque chose que vous vouliez poursuivre?

At 14, discovering a group of varieties that settled in the village where I spent my holidays. I remember coming to see them unload and install their equipment, rehearse, play etc... The show was hypnotic and I had only one desire: to be in their place on stage! From then on, I went to see all the variety groups in the surrounding villages with my moped!

A 14 ans en découvrant un groupe de variétés qui s'installait dans le village où je passais mes vacances. Je me souviens être venu les voir décharger et installer leur matériel, répéter, jouer etc... Le spectacle était hypnotique et je n'avais qu'une envie : être à leur place sur scène! Dès lors, j'allais voir tous les groupes de variétés dans les villages aux alentours avec ma mobylette!

Did you participate in any bands prior to Fuzz? If so, can you tell me about those times and what those experiences were like for you?

As-tu participé à des groupes avant Fuzz? Si oui, pouvez-vous me parler de ces moments et quelles ont été ces expériences pour vous?

Before Fuzz we had founded our first group with Frank Tassy on guitar and vocals, Michel Amar on drums, Norbert on guitar and me on bass and vocals on a few songs: Airport. We did variety covers but also Santana, Eagles, Chicago, Peter Frampton, Telephone, etc. My brother was a guitarist, I was a bass player but I also sang a few songs. A singer and a pianist were added to the group a few months later. But my brother and I wanted to play hard rock and playing variety became more and more difficult for us. So we decided to leave this group and found our own which better suited our desire.

Avant Fuzz nous avions fondé notre premier groupe avec Frank Tassy à la guitare et au chant, Michel Amar à la batterie, Norbert à la guitare et moi à la basse et au chant sur quelques titres : Airport. Nous faisions des reprises de variétés mais aussi de Santana, Eagles, Chicago, Peter Frampton, Téléphone etc... Mon frère était guitariste, j'étais bassiste mais je chantais également quelques morceaux. Une chanteuse et un pianiste se sont rajoutés quelques mois plus tard au groupe. Mais mon frère et moi voulions jouer du hard rock et jouer de la variété nous était de plus en plus pénible. Alors nous avons décidé de quitter ce groupe et de fonder le nôtre qui correspondait mieux à notre envie.

How did you initially meet your bandmates Jacques Jimenez, Jean Guy and Thierry Moya?

Comment avez-vous rencontré au départ vos compagnons de groupe Jacques Jimenez, Jean Guy et Thierry Moya?

My brother Norbert "Nono" had known Jean "Jeannot" Guy at school and knew that he was studying drums at the conservatory. So we did a test with him and kept him with us. We also recruited a friend of mine from high school, Jean-Marc "Garcimore" Alloza, on rhythm guitar. This last wishing to stop the music after a few months, we put an advertisement to look for a new guitarist and it is Thierry "Ted" Moya that we decided to keep. Some time later, I had decided not to sing in the group anymore to devote myself only to bass, so we recruited Jacques. But the latter only made a brief stint with us for personal reasons and I resumed my role as bassist/singer.

Mon frère Norbert « Nono » avait connu Jean « Jeannot » Guy à l'école et savait qu'il étudiait la batterie au conservatoire. Nous avons donc fait un test avec lui et l'avons gardé avec nous. Nous avons également recruté un de mes amis du lycée, Jean-Marc « Garcimore » Alloza, à la guitare rythmique. Ce dernier souhaitant arrêter la musique au bout de quelques mois, nous avons mis une annonce pour rechercher un nouveau guitariste et c'est Thierry « Ted » Moya que nous avons décidé de garder. Quelques temps après, j'avais décidé de ne plus chanter dans le groupe pour me consacrer uniquement à la basse, alors nous avons recruté Jacques. Mais ce dernier n'a fait qu'un bref passage chez nous pour des raisons personnelles et j'ai repris mon rôle de bassiste/chanteur.

What were your first impressions of them and what led to starting this group together?

Quelles ont été vos premières impressions à leur sujet et qu'est-ce qui vous a amené à créer ce groupe ensemble?

Nono and I were completely won over by Jean who was an excellent drummer. In addition, he had the same humor as us so it could only go well! For Thierry, it was first of all his seriousness and his solid rhythms because when he came to the audition, he did not crash once. His mentality, his guitar playing and his humor made the decision to take him with us unanimous!

Nono et moi avons été complètement séduit par Jean qui était un excellent batteur. De plus, il avait le même humour que nous alors cela ne pouvait que bien se passer ! Pour Thierry, se fût d'abord son sérieux et ses rythmiques solides car quand il est venu à l'audition, il ne s'est pas planté une seule fois. Sa mentalité, son jeu de guitare et son humour ont fait que la décision de le prendre avec nous a été unanime!

What initially led to the decision to start the group?

Qu'est-ce qui a initialement conduit à la décision de créer le groupe?

My brother and I had decided to create a band to play our hard rock compositions. Nono being guitarist and me bassist / singer, we lacked a drummer. Jean "Jeannot" was therefore recruited. To complete this trio we took Jean-Marc who was a rhythm guitarist. Very quickly, the name written in large letters on my brother's first distortion pedal became the name of our band: Fuzz. Thierry "Ted" arrived just after the departure of Jean-Marc who did not stay very long.

Mon frère et moi avions décidé de créer un groupe afin de jouer nos compositions de hard rock. Nono étant guitariste et moi bassiste/chanteur, il nous manquait un batteur. Jean « Jeannot » a donc été recruté. Pour compléter ce trio nous avons pris Jean-Marc qui était un guitariste rythmique. Très vite, le nom inscrit en grosse lettre sur la première pédale distorsion de mon frère est devenu le nom de notre groupe : Fuzz. Thierry « Ted » est arrivé juste après le départ de Jean-Marc qui n'est pas resté très longtemps.

Where would you guys rehearse and where did the band make their live debut?

Où répéteriez-vous et où le groupe a-t-il fait ses débuts en live?

When Fuzz was formed, we were initially rehearsing in a room under a retirement home that belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Tassy, ​​Frank's parents! But playing hard in a retirement home for the elderly is quite embarrassing so we rented a room on the outskirts of Marseille (La Penne sur Huveaune) which was quite expensive given the little money we had at the time. ... Our first public concert took place at the MJC Corderie in Marseille!

Quand Fuzz a été formé, nous répétions au départ dans un local sous une maison de retraite qui appartenait à M. et Mme Tassy, les parents de Frank ! Mais jouer du hard dans une maison de retraite de personnes âgées est assez gênant alors nous avons loué un local à la périphérie de Marseille (La Penne sur Huveaune) qui nous coûtait assez cher vu le peu d'argent que nous avions à l'époque... Notre premier concert en public s'est déroulé à la MJC Corderie à Marseille!

What was that experience like?

Can you tell me about the single you guys released in ‘81?

Pouvez-vous me parler du single que vous avez sorti en 81?

In 1979 we met the Trolley Bus group which was under contract with Les Productions Amicalement Vôtre. They were older and played rock a lot less violent than ours but liked the energy that we gave out in our music. We became friends and they recorded our first compositions on their 4-track tape recorder. What a joy for us to finally have a correct recording of our compositions to listen to around us! Then the band decided to quit production and told us to contact producer Jean-Louis Giordano who was looking for a band to replace them: which we did. Les Productions Amicalement Vôtre, after having listened to our tapes, wanted to present a group at DISCOM 80 in Paris. We of course accepted and I went to Paris where I was able to meet a lot of stars including Patrick Hernandez who sang Born To Be Alive. Contact was made with Cime Records for the release of our single.

En 1979 nous avons rencontré le groupe Trolley Bus qui était sous contrat avec Les Productions Amicalement Vôtre. Ils étaient plus âgés et jouaient un rock beaucoup moins violent que le nôtre mais aimaient l'énergie que nous dégagions dans notre musique. Nous sommes devenus potes et ils ont enregistré nos premières composition sur leur magnétophone 4 pistes. Quelle joie pour nous d'avoir enfin un enregistrement correct de nos compositions à faire écouter autour de nous! Puis le groupe a décidé de quitter la production et nous a dit de contacter le producteur Jean-Louis Giordano qui cherchait un groupe pour les remplacer : ce que nous avons fait. Les Productions Amicalement Vôtre, après avoir écouté nos bandes, souhaitaient présenter un groupe au DISCOM 80 à Paris. Nous avons bien sur accepté et je suis monté sur Paris où j'ai pu rencontrer pas mal de vedettes dont Patrick Hernandez qui chantait Born To Be Alive. Un contact a été pris avec Cime Records pour la sortie de notre single.

What was the process of writing and recording those songs and how did that all initially come to be?

Quel a été le processus d'écriture et d'enregistrement de ces chansons et comment tout cela est-il arrivé au départ?

Initially, my brother and I had found the melodies for Satan's Fans and Renonce Pas, but we had no lyrics. In law school I had a friend, Alain Le Diabat, who wrote texts, so I asked him to entrust them to me. We chose the one that fit best in each melody and we presented the result to Jeannot and Ted who each made their own little arrangements.

Au départ, mon frère et moi avions trouvé les mélodies de Satan's Fans et Renonce Pas mais nous n'avions pas de paroles. En faculté de droit j'avais un ami, Alain Le Diabat, qui écrivait des textes, alors je lui ai demandé de me les confier. On a choisit celui qui rentrait le mieux dans chaque mélodie et on a présenté le résultat à Jeannot et Ted qui ont apporté chacun leurs petits arrangements.

When and where did recording begin in ‘81?

Quand et où l'enregistrement a-t-il commencé en 81?

We returned to the Productions Amicalement Vôtre studio in 1980 after making contact with the Cime Records publishing company at DISCOM. We were really not satisfied with the sound but given the urgency, the MIDEM date approaching, the single was released anyway...

How did you guys land the deal with Les Productions Amicalement Votre?

After completing the recording of the 2 tracks, Jean-Louis, our producer, offered us an exclusivity contract that we signed.

What did you guys want to express, or get across with that single?

Que vouliez-vous exprimer ou faire passer avec ce single?

I don't remember that we had any message whatsoever to get across. We were just a bunch of friends who wanted to have a blast playing hard rock and share it with an audience!

Je ne me souviens pas que nous ayons eu un quelconque message à faire passer. Nous étions juste une bande d'amis qui voulaient s'éclater en jouant du hard rock et partager cela avec un public!

Did you guys play any gigs after the single was released?

Avez-vous joué des concerts après la sortie du single?

We did very few concerts after the single was released because first Jeannot, then Ted were called up to do their military service for a year... My brother and I managed to get us reformed but a member was still missing and it was a very difficult period for the group.

Nous avons fait très peu de concerts après la sortie du single car d'abord Jeannot, puis Ted ont été appelé pour faire leur service militaire pendant une année... Mon frère et moi avons réussi à nous faire réformer mais il manquait toujours un membre et la période a été très difficile pour le groupe.

The band was active from ‘79 to ‘82, correct?

Le groupe a été actif de 79 à 82, n'est-ce pas?

That's right! In 1982, we did a great gig with a lot of bands from Marseille for the creation of Forum 92 radio in Marseille with Vince Taylor starring. It was awesome! We didn't think it would be our last concert... Shortly after, we decided to end our collaboration by mutual agreement. Our drummer, Jeannot, had barely left the army, Ted had succeeded in being reformed but we no longer had the strength and the courage to continue the adventure because the money was sorely lacking. We had to find a job and a stable situation, so we embarked on different projects, while continuing to play together or solo.

C'est exact ! En 1982, nous avons fait un super concert avec un grand nombre de groupes de Marseille pour la création de la radio Forum 92 à Marseille avec Vince Taylor en vedette. C'était génial! Nous ne pensions pas que ce serait notre dernier concert... Peu de temps après, nous avons décidé de mettre fin à notre collaboration d'un commun accord. Notre batteur, Jeannot, sortait à peine de l'armée, Ted avait réussi à se faire réformer mais nous n'avions plus la force et le courage de continuer l'aventure car l'argent nous faisait cruellement défaut. Il fallait que l'on trouve un travail et une situation stable alors nous nous sommes lancés dans des projets différents, tout en continuant de jouer ensemble ou en solo.

What was the band's process and approach to writing music?

Quel a été le processus et l'approche du groupe pour écrire de la musique?

Usually, Nono and I would bring the melody and the structure of the composition, before finalizing it at 4. Then Nono and I would write the score to send it to SACEM.

En général, Nono et moi apportions la mélodie et la structure de la composition, avant de la finaliser à 4. Ensuite Nono et moi écrivions la partition pour l'envoyer à la SACEM.

What did you guys want to do that was maybe different from a lot of the other groups coming out of that scene during that time?

Qu'est-ce que vous vouliez faire qui était peut-être différent de beaucoup d'autres groupes issus de cette scène à cette époque?

We wanted to do energetic, simple but effective hard rock with lyrics in French. At the time there were really excellent groups on the Marseille scene but everyone managed to find their place!

Nous voulions faire un hard rock énergique, simple mais efficace avec des textes en français. A l'époque il y avait vraiment d'excellents groupes sur la scène marseillaise mais chacun arrivait à trouver sa place!

What eventually happened to the group after ‘82?

Qu'est-il finalement arrivé au groupe après 82?

Jeannot opened a tiling and masonry business. Nono and Ted opened a music store in Marseille: CMO (Central Music Occasion). As for me, I passed a competition so I started working at the Ministry of the Interior while taking care of the management of CMO clients.

Jeannot a ouvert une entreprise de carrelage et de maçonnerie. Nono et Ted ont ouvert un magasin de musique sur Marseille : CMO (Central Music Occasion). Quant à moi, j'ai réussi un concours et j'ai donc commencé à travailler au Ministère de l'Intérieur tout en me chargeant de la gestion des clients de CMO.

In 2018 Memoire Neuve released a whole LP worth of material that had never seen the light of day until recently. Can you tell me about that and how that all came to be?

En 2018, Mémoire Neuve a sorti tout un LP de matériel qui n'avait jamais vu le jour jusqu'à récemment. Pouvez-vous me parler de cela et comment tout cela est arrivé?

In 2017, Claude, from the label 45Vinylvidivici, contacted me to suggest that I record an LP with our never-published tracks. I then searched for all the recordings we had and it was not easy... I could not find the 4-track tapes that must have been lost but by looking, I managed to get my hands on some K7 recorded in rehearsals... It was really difficult to find recordings made 35 years ago! At that time, Claude told me to contact Régis from the Mémoire Neuve label who wanted to take care of the LP. So I sent him a package containing all of our old K7s so the sound engineers could fix them up because the sound was so bad. When it was done, Régis submitted the result to me and sent the model of the cover! I was super happy with the result and I thank Claude, Régis and his team for their work!

En 2017, Claude, du label 45Vinylvidivici, m'a contacté pour me proposer d'enregistrer un LP avec nos titres jamais édités. J'ai alors recherché tous les enregistrements que nous avions et ce ne fut pas facile... Je ne suis pas arrivé à retrouver les bandes 4 pistes qui ont du se perdre mais en cherchant, j'ai réussi à mettre la main sur des K7 enregistrées en répétitions... C'était vraiment difficile de retrouver des enregistrements fait il y a 35 ans ! A ce moment là, Claude m'a dit de contacter Régis du label Mémoire Neuve qui souhaitait se charger du LP. Je lui ai donc envoyé un colis contenant toutes nos vieilles K7 afin que les ingénieurs du son puissent les arranger car le son était vraiment pourri. Quand ce fut fait, Régis m'a soumis le résultat et envoyé la maquette de la pochette ! J'étais super content du résultat et je remercie Claude, Régis et son équipe pour leur travail!

The material featured on the LP was recorded from ‘80 to ‘82. Can you walk me through the band’s process of writing as well as recording those songs?

Le matériel présenté sur le LP a été enregistré de 80 à 82. Pouvez-vous m'expliquer le processus d'écriture du groupe ainsi que l'enregistrement de ces chansons?

Nono often found the chords and I the bass then the melody. We corrected it together before pasting one of the texts of Alain, our lyricist. When the result suited us we took care of the structure of the piece with the verses, the chorus, the introduction, the bridge, the solo... Then we showed the result to Ted and Jeannot who brought their arrangements and their ideas. When the title was ready, we recorded it on a tape recorder so that we could listen to it and correct it if necessary. Then, when we had enough tracks ready, a friend would come with his 4 track tape recorder to record us.

Nono trouvait bien souvent les accords et moi la basse puis la mélodie. Nous la corrigions ensemble avant de lui coller un des textes d'Alain, notre parolier. Quand le résultat nous convenait on se chargeait de la structure du morceau avec les couplets, le refrain, l'introduction, le pont, le solo... Ensuite on montrait le résultat à Ted et Jeannot qui apportaient leurs arrangements et leurs idées. Quand le titre était au point, nous l'enregistrions sur un magnétophone pour pouvoir l'écouter et le corriger si nécessaire. Ensuite, quand nous avions suffisamment de titres prêts, un ami venait avec son magnétophone 4 pistes pour nous enregistrer.

What do you think would have happened with the band if that record had come out prior to you guys disbanding?

Que pensez-vous qu'il se serait passé avec le groupe si cet album était sorti avant votre séparation?

It would have changed everything and the future of Fuzz would not have been the same! We would not have separated and would have continued to play... But here it is, that's life...

Cela aurait tout changé et l'avenir de Fuzz n'aurait pas été le même! Nous ne nous serions pas séparés et aurions continuer à jouer... Mais voilà, c'est la vie...

When you reflect back on that period in your life, what are you most proud of?

Quand vous repensez à cette période de votre vie, de quoi êtes-vous le plus fier?

I am proud to have been able to overcome all obstacles and succeed in playing music! Nono and I were self-taught and never took a single music lesson ... we couldn't even read a sheet music! In addition, we had no money and we had to make huge sacrifices to buy ourselves the necessary equipment. I thank my parents who have always been on our side and helped us as much as they could. But I think what makes the group the most proud is to have participated in MIDEM in 1981! What a magical experience! We drank and ate with celebrities, signed autographs on the steps of the Palais des Festivals, attended private concerts, met people who offered to shoot in a television series, recorded a clip for RAI etc...

Je suis fier d'avoir pu franchir tous les obstacles et réussir à jouer de la musique ! Nono et moi étions des autodidactes et n'avons jamais pris une seule leçon de musique... nous ne savions même pas lire une partition ! De plus, nous n'avions pas d'argent et nous avons du faire d'énormes sacrifices pour nous acheter le matériel nécessaire. Je remercie mes parents qui ont toujours été de notre coté et nous ont aidé autant qu'ils le pouvaient. Mais je pense que ce qui rend le plus fier le groupe, c'est d'avoir participé au MIDEM en 1981! Quelle expérience magique ! Nous avons bu et mangé avec des célébrités, signé des autographes sur les marches du palais des festivals, assisté à des concerts privés, rencontré des personnes qui nous proposaient de tourner dans une série télévisée, enregistré un clip pour la RAI etc...

Are you still in contact with some of those guys?

Êtes-vous toujours en contact avec certains de ces gars?

My brother having disappeared in 2009, Jeannot, Ted and I remained friends. Even though we don't see each other often, we keep in touch.

Mon frère ayant disparu en 2009, Jeannot, Ted et moi sommes restés amis. Même si nous ne nous voyons pas souvent, nous restons en contact.

What are your thoughts on a whole new generation taking an interest and having an appreciation for the band after all these years?

Malgré cela, j'ai pu faire pas mal de choses comme : la figuration au cinéma, la reconstitution historique, la musique médiévale, l'écriture de textes pour un ami compositeur et de poèmes, la composition d'une musique classique pour un spectacle et d'un titre dance floor en vente sur le web.
